During the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire under control,146 workers had died. At a memorial service for the victims, union leader Rose Schneiderman called for action. The life of those boys is hard and boy sold newspapers and shined shoes on the streets.Children did many jobs in the late 1800s. Girls often cooked or cleaned for boarders staying with their family. Girls also worked at home with their mothers sewing clothes or making handicrafts.Businesses employed children in factories because some children were paid as little as 40 cents per day. Marie Van Vorst helped focus attention on the problem of child labor.
